Dear friends:

My wife Peggy and I are excited to be coming here to be with you during this time of transition.  I’ve known Jack for many years and we look forward to getting to know you and participate in the life and ministry of Trinity Pres. I am also looking forward to working with Vincent and your entire staff and session. I feel very much called to help churches within our Presbytery transition from one pastoral leader to the next. This is an exciting time for Trinity and God will lead.

Just a little about me so you’ll understand some of my humor and sermon illustrations: I was born and raised in California, growing up in the rural area around Fresno on a small ranch we affectionately called “the farm”. My family moved to the bay area in the mid 60’s and I’ve loved this area ever since. I felt God’s calling on my life from a very young age, asking Jesus to be my Lord and Savior while in grade school. At the time we attended a Mennonite church in Reedley CA. During my college days, I worked with a campus witnessing organization and began to prepare for attending seminary. I was ordained in the San Francisco Presbytery in 1980 after graduating from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena. I then served as Associate Pastor at Presbyterian Church of the Master in Mission Viejo CA. I have been a member of the San Jose Presbytery since 1989 serving as Parish Associate at the Mountain View and Los Altos churches. During this time I was
managing my family’s commercial HVAC business. I have served the Presbytery as Interim Pastor at the Felton Presbyterian Church, as temporary Stated Supply at the First Church San Jose while the pastor was on leave. I have also served as Interim Pastor in Monterey at El Estero Presbyterian Church, the oldest Asian congregation in the Presbytery, and a one year term as Supply Pastor/Head of Staff at First Presbyterian Church of Hollister while their pastor, David Rodriguez, was on leave serving as a military chaplain stationed in Iraq. I come to you from West Valley Presbyterian Church where I just completed a similar transition with them. I also serve on a variety of task forces, committees and commissions within the San Jose Presbytery, most recently working on the General Assembly COLA (Committee On Local Arrangements) where I worked on four different special events.

My hobbies include, reading, stunt kite flying, woodworking, gardening and home improvement projectes, which never seem to diminish in number or scope.  I love to do a lot of different things and find great joy in trying new and different experiences. I find learning new things challenging and fun.

Peggy and I have been married for 34 years. She is Controller at I Squared, a manufacture’s rep. company in San Jose. We have two adult sons, Matthew and Daniel who is married to Michelle and lives in Anaheim. We look forward to being involved in the life and ministry of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

In Christ’s service,  Lyle Schmidt
